What we believe at Church at Denver about Jesus, the Bible, and the Church

What We Value:

Our Beliefs

The Bible

We believe the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God. Men controlled by the Spirit of God wrote the words of Scripture. Therefore, the Bible is without error. It is the final authority for matters of faith and practice.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 | 2 Peter 1:20-21

God co-exists in three distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is also called the Triune God, or the Trinity. Mysterious and awesome is this reality about God; man-made illustrations ultimately fail in trying to explain the three persons of the Godhead. We see the Triune God at work and co-existing as these three distinct persons all throughout Scripture.

Acts 17:29 | John 1 | Romans 1:20 | Colossians 2:9 | Matthew 28:19-20 | 1 John 5:6-7

God the father

God is the first person in the Trinity. God is great: He is all powerful, all knowing, ever present, unchanging, completely worthy of our trust, and above all, holy. It is in Him that we live, move and exist. God is good: He is our Father. He is loving, compassionate, and faithful to His people and His promises.

Exodus 3:14 | Numbers 23:19 | Leviticus 11:44-45, 19:2 | Psalm 11:4-6 | Malachi 3:6 | John 3:164:245:2614:1 | Acts 17:28 | Romans 3:3-4

God the son

Jesus is the second person in the Trinity. Jesus Christ is completely human, but at the same time completely God. He is the only plan for bringing people who are enemies of God back into a right relationship with God. He lived a perfect life, so that He could be a substitution for us in satisfying God’s demands for perfection. He defeated death in His resurrection so that we could have life.

Isaiah 7:1453 | Matthew 1:18-233:178:2914:3316:1628:5-6 | Luke 22:70 | John 1:1-1410:3011:25-2717:1-5 | Acts 1:92:22-247:55-56 | Romans 1:3-43:23-268:1-310:4 | 1 Corinthians 8:6 | 2 Corinthians 5:19-21Galatians 4:4-5 | Philippians 2:5-11 | Colossians 1:152:9 | 1 Timothy 2:5-63:16

God the Holy SPirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Trinity. He was sent upon saints of old on an assignment basis, to better enable prophets or leaders of Israel to lead God’s people. In the same way He was breathed upon the disciples as Jesus sent them out on mission. But Jesus promised that when He went away He would send the Holy Spirit to come for good, to fill believers, and that He did at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit indwells believers at the moment of salvation, sealing them, regenerating them, providing gifts for ministry and mission, becoming a guide to help us trust and follow Christ and understand Scriptural truth. He empowers us for ministry and bears fruit in us as we yield our lives to Him.

Matthew 4:128.19 | 2 Corinthians 3:16-1813:14 | Ephesians 4:4-6,30 | Romans 8:9,11,16,26,2715:30 | John 6:6314:26 | Isaiah 63:10 | Acts 2:4, 5:327:5120:2828:25-26 | Luke 12:12

Mankind was created in the image of God to have fellowship with Him, but became alienated from that relationship through sinful disobedience. As a result, every human being is a sinner and under the condemnation of God. Man is not capable of coming back into a right relationship with God by his own effort.

Genesis 1:263:1-6 | Romans 5:123:23

We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sins. Salvation is offered freely by the grace of God to be received by those who put their faith in Jesus Christ’s death, burial and resurrection.

1 Peter 1:18-19 | Ephesians 2:8-9 | Romans 10:9-10

The Christian Life (Light)

We believe that every Christian should live for Christ and not for himself. Christ came not just to provide salvation, but also transformation in our lives. By obedience to God’s Word and daily yielding to the Holy Spirit, every believer will mature and start to think and act like Jesus. Also, we believe in the worship leadership of all believers, that through the Spirit in us, we all worship God daily in Spirit and in truth. This life of supernatural love and truth is alien and uncommon, making Christians an intriguing light to those in darkness. This intrigue is advantageous to God’s mission.

Galatians 2:20 | Psalm 119:9-10, 1 | Corinthians 2:6-16 | John 4:23-24 | Matthew 5:15-16 | Peter 1:13-15 | 1 Peter 1

The Church

We believe that the Church is a living spiritual body of which Jesus Christ is the Head. The members are those who have trusted by faith in the finished work of Jesus; they are His redeemed Bride. The purpose of the Church is to glorify God by loving Him and by spreading God’s fame and Gospel to a lost world.

Ephesians 4:15-16 | Corinthians 12:12-13 | Acts 1:8

Man was created as an eternal being. He will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is Heaven. Heaven and Hell are places of eternal existence.

1 John 2:255:11-13 | John 3:1636 | Romans 6:23 | Revelation 20:15

Final Authority

The statement of faith does not exhaust the extent of our beliefs. The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe. For purposes of Church at Denver’s faith, doctrine, practice, policy, and discipline, our board of elders has final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.
